Can Cloth Diapers Really Save You Money?
Here's my cloth diaper story... I wanted to start cloth diapers with my son, Joshua, when he was born. But, I didn't like the idea of laundering poopy diapers everyday. We looked into hiring a diaper service - a company that would pick up our dirty diapers and drop off clean ones. But, we just couldn't afford that convenience ($75 a month in our area! Yikes!). So, we purchased disposable diapers for Joshua for 17 months. I felt terrible about adding more diaper waste to landfills, but I thought disposables were our only real option. Then, I read an article about
early potty training.
They mentioned how cloth pants help toddlers learn to stay dry - because they can feel wet. During potty training, you want your toddler to feel the difference between wet and dry. And, disposable diapers and pull-ups absorb too much moisture. That made a lot of sense to me. So, I started researching cloth potty pants and cloth diapers again - hoping I would find some great prices. I knew I would have to launder them myself, but I felt better about that after I bought my
'green' cleaning products.
My green cleaning kit came with some awesome laundry detergent. It worked perfectly on my other clothes, so I knew it would get the cloth diapers super clean. Anyways...that's a topic for another page! :o)
Super Easy Cloth Diapers Ok...these are worth raving about!
bumGenius 3.0 One-Size Cloth Diapers are completely adjustable. They fit babies from 7-35 pounds! That means that one diaper will fit your child from birth into toddler hood. They have snaps on the front that can be secured to make the diaper smaller. They also come with 2 microfiber inserts that you stuff into a wide pocket. One of the inserts is long, with snaps to make it smaller. And, the other insert is small to fit newborns, and can be used as an overnight booster for older kids. The diaper pocket keeps the inserts in place, and holds the moisture in. I have only had ONE leak with Joshua in 3 months of use, and he's a very heavy wetter. Plus, the soft inner fabric has ended his diaper rash, and keeps red leg marks away. I bought 3 of these diapers, to use at night. I am so impressed with them, I plan to buy more for my next baby. I also found Kushies Flushable Biodegradable Diaper Liners - which ended my fear of messy poopy diapers. You place a flushable liner into the diaper, over the cloth pocket so it's next to baby's skin. No worries - it's super soft. Then, you just peel out the liner and flush the mess away.
And, even if they do get poopy, the bumGenius diapers are so easy to clean. I simply use a very soft brush to remove any mess, then I pull out the liners and rinse. I attach the diaper's Velcro tabs to it's laundry tabs, and launder everything every 4th day. Once on cold, once on hot, and a medium-heat tumble dry. Then, I just stuff the liners back into the diaper, and they are ready to go! Cloth Training Pants I found some great cloth potty pants and waterproof covers at www.pottyscotty.com. Their pants absorb moisture from little accidents, while the waterproof covers protect clothes and furniture.
And, the cotton lining holds moisture against the skin, so the tot feels wet. These are the best for potty training - for sure - and their prices are great! When We are Out and About We use gDiapers when we're out of the house.
They are cloth diapers with plastic-free waterproof liners and flushable inserts. They are wonderful little hybrids! You take the 'little-g' cloth diaper and snap in a waterproof liner. Then, you load the flushable liner and put it on your baby. It secures in the back with Velcro, to prevent your baby from taking it off. How smart! Then, when it's time for a change - you can have another gDiaper ready to go. Make a quick change, and then take care of the soiled diaper. The soiled insert can be flushed, composted or trashed. It breaks down immediately in the toilet and sewage system. Or, it will break down within 50-150 days in a garden compost or landfill. All the ingredients used in the inserts are completely safe for your baby, and the Earth. If the waterproof liner gets wet or soiled, it can be washed by hand and air dried in 10 minutes. Or, throw the liner and the cloth 'little-g' pants in the laundry with your regular clothes. gDiapers are so easy! And, they are super conveinent to use while you are out and about. Now we use cloth diapers at home and gDiapers while we're out. It's the best of both worlds! :o)
Price Comparisons The bumGenius diapers are $17.95 each, which is not bad for an all-in-one diaper. And, the diaper grows with your baby, so you don't have to purchase different sizes. If you buy 18 diapers, you'll spend about $315.00. That's the same price as a year's supply of diapers from a wholesale club store. But, the bumGenius diapers will last you longer than a year, and can be used with future babies. Plus, they are better for the environment (no waste), and are better for your baby (less diaper rash and faster potty training). And, if you use them on additional babies, they will actually save you money! The gDiapers starter packs come with 2 'little-g' pants, 2 liners, and 10 flushable inserts for $26.99. Then you can buy more liners as you need them. Just some food for thought! ***If you are interested in ordering, feel free to click the links above.
